The Best of Bobbi

Bobbi Brown Talks to Stanford students, March 2012

Bobbi Brown-makeup guru, healthy living advocate, and entrepreneur extraordinaire–shared some of her ‘words to live by’ at SWIB’s Bobbi Brown event last week. Check out Bobbi’s Best Tips below:

1. “Keep yourself open–you never know what will happen!” Bobbi went to two different colleges before discovering her passion for makeup as a theatrical makeup major at Emerson College. Post-college, Brown waited tables and worked as much as she could doing makeup on movie sets, small-scale photo shoots, and on herself!
2. Do whatever you have to! Being a career makeup artist was virtually unheard of when Bobbi started out. To book jobs, she made a business card, pored through the Yellow Pages, and made cold calls, doing anything she could to practice her craft. No job was too big or too small!
3. NETWORKING is key. You never know how someone you meet can help you in the future! An editor friend at Glamour magazine helped Bobbi launch her first line of lipsticks, which turned into the global brand it is today.
4. Stick to your guns: Bobbi has always believed that women are beautiful as they are; using makeup only enhances their natural features. That’s why she has never followed trends or strayed from her philosophy of simplicity and common sense–”The Essentials”!
5. Bobbi’s “Brand DNA”: Keeping it Simple, Real, and Approachable.
6. Never take ‘no’ for an answer–if you want something, keep at it until you achieve your goal.
7. Balance: Brown loves that her company is a ‘lifestyle brand’ advocating eating healthy foods, exercising, and taking care of yourself on the inside and outside. Bonus fact: Bobbi treats her staff to “a year of health” and brings in experts in yoga, spinning, healthy cooking, and skincare.
8. Creating a ‘buzz’ with guerilla marketing is key, especially now in the age of social media. Bobbi has her own Facebook page and a rockin’ blog: http://www.everythingbobbi.com/en/
9. Making a Difference: “The more you give, the more you get back.” Making a difference in your community is key to success in business and in life. Bobbi’s favorite charities include Dress For Success (Brown and guests at the 2010 Gala Event for DFS raised over 2 million dollars!), FEED headed by friend Lauren Bush, and ‘adopting’ schools in her area (the most recent was Broome Street Academy of Liz Murray, author of “Breaking Night,” fame. Learn more about Liz at http://manifestliving.com/ and check out Broome Street Academy on their homepage, http://www.broomestreetacademy.org)
10. Bobbi Brown’s “Secret to Beauty”: BE WHO YOU ARE!

A big thank you to Bobbi Brown for speaking to us last week! You can check out more pics from the event on the SWIB Facebook page
